Immediately, many fans considered this a sign that Australian swimming depth remains formidable. But placed against the context of the event – a WA state age and open short course championship – that touch needs to be read with caution. The 2026 WA Age & Open Short Course Championships lasted three days, featuring athletes from clubs such as Highlanders, Hale Aquatics and Kwinana. This is short-course swimming, where turns and underwater work can make a huge difference. However, the official results did not publish any technical metrics: no split times, no stroke rates, no underwater duration or turn efficiency. We only have final times. Sam Carmignani swam the 100m individual medley in 56.46, improving by more than one second – a significant jump for a young swimmer. State records, while meaningful, do not automatically translate into world-class results. Joshua Yong is an excellent state-level breaststroker but remains far from global leaders. Brielle Dredge is consistent but her times do not approach international medal range. Iona Anderson, likely better in backstroke than IM, may be using this meet to test form. Crucially, short-course times cannot be directly transferred to long-course ability. State relay record can rely on turn skills and underwater kicking, which shrink in long course. Observers should avoid overinterpreting. Still, this event reflects the Western Australian swimming system. Iona Anderson represents established elite, while Carmignani deserves follow-up. One performance is not enough to project a career. The real value is in the trend. Australian swimmers often use early short-course meet for testing before the long-course season. The national long-course trials are the real gateway. This meet should not be read as evidence of a depth shift. The key is how athletes build on these results over time.
